Five minutes of care on the first burn decides how the remaining fifty-nine hours go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The first burn matters most<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Burn for two to three hours the first time, until the melt pool reaches the edge of the vessel. Soy wax has a memory: if you put it out while the pool is still narrow, it will tunnel down that same narrow channel for the rest of its life and you will lose a third of the wax to the walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trim the wick every time<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before each burn, trim the cotton wick to about 5&nbsp;mm. An untrimmed wick mushrooms, smokes, and throws soot onto the glass. A trimmed wick burns clean and gives a steadier flame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Four hours, no more<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Never burn for longer than four hours at a stretch. The vessel gets hot, the wick drifts, and the fragrance oil starts to cook rather than evaporate. Put it out, let it cool, trim, relight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Know when to stop<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Retire the candle when roughly 10&nbsp;mm of wax remains. Below that the flame sits too close to the base of the vessel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Safety<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Never leave a burning candle unattended.<\/li>\n<li>Keep away from children, pets, curtains and draughts.<\/li>\n<li>Burn on a heat-resistant, level surface.<\/li>\n<li>Keep the melt pool clear of wick trimmings and matches.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reusing the vessel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the candle is finished, pour just-boiled water into the vessel and let the last of the wax float free as it cools.
